Whether you’re starting your internet marketing empire through SEO, PPC, Social Media, or any other internet avenue, there is one very important thing that I’ve learned, start small!

Depending on where your skills are, you may need to start with just learning basic HTML/CSS or maybe you know enough paid search to get started right away. Either way, getting into internet marketing requires a very large investment of your time and energy (read ‘4 hour work week, the biggest lie in internet marketing‘).

It’s easy to come up with grand ideas for websites and begin mapping out a very large directory site before you even think about how you would monetize the site and/or how this site will help your other sites.

Instead, take some time with some small sites that will help you really understand how to make money online.

Have I had some success with small sites yet? Nope. But what I have had is failure with a some large directory sites I set out to build. I have bought dozens of domains and have built my share of half-developed sites that are just sitting around doing nothing.

Instead, I’m completely re-prioritizing my goals by starting with testing a very very small (< 50 pages) website. My hope in doing this is that I won’t have to devote months to the same project and instead launch a website within a week and begin testing out the waters in my select niche.

…and this time, hopefully, my eyes won’t be wider than my stomach.
